Portland is the most important city in the north-eastern US state of Maine. It is the biggest oil port on the eastern seaboard and the port with the most foreign trade in Maine.
Among its most impressive buildings are the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception; Franklin Tower, which is the tallest building in Maine; the Customs House, which replaces the old post office; and the Naval Hospital.
Visitors should go and see the Portland Observatory, the Museum of Art, the Southworth Planetarium, the Portland Harbor Museum, the Children’s Museum of Maine and the Maine Historical Society.
Nearby towns include South Portland, Westbrook and Falmouth. The city of Boston is also relatively close, and you can visit some lovely islands just offshore.
Portland’s food is of known quality and the city has a number of excellent restaurants. It is also home to many small breweries. If you want to play sports, you can go to the city’s excellent Sports Complex, which has football fields, lacrosse and hockey , basketball courts and facilities for concerts and exhibitions.
