Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is also known as the Valley Isle for the large area of fertile land between its two volcanoes: the older volcano of Mauna Kahalawai, which has been eroded considerably and the larger, impressive Haleakala.
This volcano is a massive shield volcano of bright reddish shades that forms more than 75% of Maui's area. The Haleakala National Park protects the crater and its surroundings, an area of wild nature popular with tourists who venture here to enjoy the sunrise.
