Capadocia is a historical region of Turkey; this UNESCO World Heritage area is bounded by Aksaray, Nigde, Nevsehir and Kayseri. It has a unique volcanic landscape, carved by the passage of time and the hand of man.
Various civilisations have occupied this area: Assyrians, Hittites, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and the Seleucids have all left their mark on the land. You can see the incredible underground cities -Kaymakli and Derinkuyu are two of the most important- at depths of up to 45 m. and with different levels able to house up to 20,000 people.
See the amazing Göreme open-air museum, with its excavated 3rd- and 4th-century buildings. It is still possible to admire the frescos in the churches here, which have been preserved due to lack of light.
See the Zelve Valley, with it cave dwellings, and Peribacalar vadisi, which is the valley of the fairy chimneys. Capadocia is reminiscent of a lunar or martian landscape, all is strange yet fascinating. You can even stay the night in a cave created in the 5th century if you want, or perhaps you would prefer the 5-star accommodation on offer. There are good restaurants, bars and clubs in the towns and, if you don't suffer from vertigo, you can take a hot-air balloon trip; a view of Capadocia from the air really is something special!
