Bodrum is a port town in the province of Mugla, in the southwest of the Turkish Egea region.
It is an important tourist centre and is internationally famous for its activities related to sailing.
There are two parts to the town: the east part with its beaches, bars and restaurants, which is the most lively area, with nightclubs offering entertainment at all hours. The western end focuses on sailing, and here life is more peaceful and you can enjoy a stroll through its picturesque streets.
Bodrum is located on the site of the ancient city of Halikarnassus, and as a result it has an important historical heritage, including remains of the famous Mausoleum of Halikarnassus, one of the 7 ancient wonders of the world. When the impressive monument was destroyed by an earthquake, much of the building material was used to construct Bodrum Castle in 1402. This is one of the most important attractions in the town, and nowadays it houses the award-winning Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
