Djerba is an island located off the north coast of Africa which belongs to Tunisia; the most important town here is Houmt Souk. On the island you can visit the ruins of the Aglabi dynasty, and find out about its history. Another feature of interest here is the cave village of Matmata. Djerba is home to about a hundred mosques, many of them located in lovely scenery of sand and palm trees. There are old Spanish forts, you can visit the Borj el Kebir and admire the Byzantine mosaics. Don't forget to visit one of Africa's most interesting synagogues: the Ghariba.
Take a stroll through the town and smell the scent of spices that is so typical of the Arab world. Here you can buy crafts, such as ceramics or colourful textiles, in exotic markets. Djerba has 125 km. of white sand beaches, dotted with palms. On the Midoun tourist route you will find the Explore Djerba Adventure Park. You can also visit a crocodile reserve or take a camel ride.
This island, once defended by the Turkish corsair Barbarossa, was the site for many of the scenes of the film Star Wars; it is also thought that this was the place where Ulysses escaped from the sirens' song.
