Montreux is a Swiss town in the canton of Vaud. It is located on the shores of Lake Leman; the area has many vineyards and Mediterranean vegetation, but with a setting of snowy Alps. Along the lakeside road there are many Belle Epoque buildings, like the Montreux Palace Hotel.
The picturesque lake is an invitation for water sports, or perhaps you might prefer to take a boat trip, go cycling or horse riding, playing tennis or golf, or just take a stroll to look at the fantastic landscape. Skiers and winter sports fans will love Rochers-de-Naye, Les Avants and Les Pléiades.
If you are in Montreux in December, you can see the Christmas market on the lakeside.
A sight that is well worth a visit is the Castle of Chillon, which is atop a rocky island. It was once a prison, although now it houses a museum. The medieval town of Gruyeres, nearby, is the place where the famous cheese is made.
There are excellent hotels where you can stay, the lake views are wonderful and the food and drink here are very good, since this is a meeting point for French, German and Italian customs. There are also quality shops selling some famous local products.
