Interlaken is a town and district in the Swiss canton of Bern. It is located in the centre of Switzerland, near the Alps and on the River Aar. Interlaken means ""between lakes"" and the name comes from the town's geographical position between the two lakes of the Thun and the Brienz. It took on the name in 1891, and this replaced the old name of Aarmühle.
One of the area's main attractions is the Augustinian convent, which ceased functioning in 1528. Another important attraction is the mountains that surround the town. Those of the Jungfrau massif are over 4000 metres high. The landscape is truly magnificent, especially the three main peaks, the Jungfrau (""young lady""), Monch (""monk"") and Eiger (""ogre""). It is a paradise for climbers and for anyone who loves nature.
On one of Interlaken's main streets, the Höheweg, you can visit different 19th-century buildings, such as the Casino-Kursaal. There is also a baroque castle and the main square has some old 17th-century wooden houses; one of these is the Jungfrau Museum. Interlaken has some of Europe's finest landscape, why not pay it a visit?
