La Manga del Mar Menor is split between the municipalities of Cartagena and San Javier in the Spanish region of Murcia. La Manga was created through the accumulation of sand carried by sea currents. The sediment rose to the surface as a result of collisions with volcanic formations, and this created the sand bank of La Manga, and also the lagoon known as Mar Menor. La Manga is located along a coast that is well known for its sunny weather and the warmth of the waters, which has given it the name of the Costa Cálida (""Warm Coast""). This attractive spit of sand is split in four places, which allows the Mediterranean water to enter and leave the Mar Menor.
The beaches here are extremely clean, with clear water, and so many fly the Blue Flag granted by the European Union. It is, in short, a real paradise!
The zone also has a great many leisure options, as it is one of the Mediterranean's most important tourist centres. There is a wide range of restaurants, hotels, bars, night clubs, shops, golf courses and spas, as well as the attractive scenery.
