Cantabria is an Autonomous Community in northern Spain. It has only one province, also called Cantabria. Santander is the capital of the province.
It is a region of varied flora and fauna, home to one of the last habitats of wolves, bears, capercaillie, hawks and eagles in Europe. The most important nature reserves are Saja and Picos de Europa. There are many lovely fishing villages on the coast, as well as pretty beaches, beautiful coves and generally stunning scenery. Inland, the landscape quickly becomes more mountainous, with some lovely valleys.
It is also home to several good ski resorts, one of the most popular being Pico de Tres Mares, which is in the south of the region and gets its name from the three rivers that rise there and flow to different seas. The capital, Santander, is situated in a beautiful bay, and its port is important for maritime trade.
