The city of Badajoz is in the Autonomous Community of Extremadura, in western Spain. It is the capital of the province of the same name.
Among its main places of interest is the Arabian Alcazaba (1169), which was declared an Artistic-Historical Monument in 1931. The Provincial Archeological Museum operates from a Palace in the Alcazaba, the Cathedral (on which work began in the 15th century) has different styles in its design, such as Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.
Badajoz also has a lot of old town walls, gates and bridges that are now a great magnet for tourists. Among the most popular of these are the main gate of Puerta Pilar and the Puente de Palmas bridge (1596).
We also highly recommend a visit to the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, which houses an extensive collection of sculptures and paintings, the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (Modern Art), the Museo Catedralicio, and many others.
