The city of Baia Mare is in the district of Maramures, in Romania. It is the capital of the district.
Baia Mare contains the settlements of Blidari, Firiza, Valea Neagra y Valea Borcutului. To the north it borders the Ignis Mountains, Recea and Grosi lie to the south, the city of Baia Sprie is to the east and the commune of Tautii Magherausi is to the west.
The city is in a lovely hilly area, picturesque villages and historical buildings, making it one of the nicest places in Romania.
Among the main places of interest is the Departmental Museum, which has a comprehensive collection of gold coins found in the area and dating from the medieval period. The Museum of Fine Arts houses a fantastic collection of 17th and 18th century paintings, as well as some good contemporary art. We also recommend a visit to the Tower of Stefan, which is 50 metres high and dates back to the 15th century, and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, built in 1700.
