Ponce is the main city in the south of Puerto Rico and the second largest on the island.
Its 17th-century old part includes places of historical, cultural and architectural interest, such as: Ponce Cathedral, in the middle of the city's main square, known as Plaza las Delicias; the Ponce Museum of Art; the Parque de Bombas, a building that was once the city's main fire station; and museums housed in mansions or castles with superb architecture; small convents; the La Perla theatre; the Ponce Casino; and many other buildings. Several districts of the city have colonial houses with outstanding wrought iron balconies displaying beautiful flowers. Some of these districts have a picturesque mountainous background.
The old Atocha street is a car-free zone with many shops, restaurants and bars; the perfect place to go shopping. A number of rivers run here. The most important of them is the Portugués which, together with the Bucana, flow into Ponce port.
