Trondheim is located in the central area of Norway, and is one of the country's largest cities. It is home to the important University of Science and Technology, which trains 80% of Norway's engineers. It is also the location of offices of companies like Google, Yahoo, Opera and Sun Microsystems. Trondheim is a coastal city at the mouth of the River Nidelva and despite the major fires that have occurred throughout its history, it still has treasures from the Viking period of the Middle Ages. One of these is Nidaros Cathedral; it is much restored and in the Gothic style, with certain English and Romanesque influences. This building is the site of St Olaf's tomb. Trondheim Archbishop's Palace, to the south of the cathedral, is the oldest stone building in Scandinavia, and is currently a museum of archaeology, art and religious and military history; it also houses the Norwegian crown jewels.
This place has excellent train and bus connections and it is an ideal base for cycling, excursions, fishing, skiing and other sports. There are boat trips along both banks of the River Nidelva, with its landscape which will be green, multicoloured or totally white, depending on the time of year when you visit this city.
