Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. The islands are a part of the state of Kedah, which is adjacent to the Thai border.

Kedah is a rather small state and the Langkawi islands are opposite its coast. This state is considered to be the ""rice bowl"" of Malaysia, given its many paddy fields.

The area's beaches and islands are some of the most beautiful in Southeast Asia: white sand that shines under a bright tropical sun and a gentle sea breeze. The landscape is truly lovely.

One of the most interesting places to visit here is the Bujang Valley or Lembah Bujang, a sprawling historical complex in the foothills of the Gunung Jerai. This is Malaysia's richest area as regards archaeology. There is proof that there was an ancient Hindu-Buddhist empire here around the year 300. The area also includes a large number of museums with detailed historical information.
