Luxembourg city is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The city was originally a fortress for defence and it only later became a town. Wandering through the streets of this lovely city, you can discover its fine architectural heritage, which contrasts perfectly with the natural setting. You can also see two different parts of the city: a dynamic, modern part and the pleasant old town, which has many fortifications and underground tunnels, or casemates, as well as other interesting constructions. We recommend visiting the Rocher de Bock fort, an interesting walled site housing many of Luxembourg's ancient defences. It is also a great spot for views of the city.

Another place that is much recommended is the Grand Ducal Palace, richly decorated in the Spanish Renaissance style, this building is still the residence of the country's ruling family. At one end of the Palace is the Cathedral of Nôtre Dame, which is a fine Gothic building.
