Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania. It is in the south eastern part of the country at the meeting of the Vilna and Neris rivers, in the midst of pine-covered hills.
Its historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is remarkable for being the largest baroque centre in Europe. One of the symbols of Vilnius is the tower of Gediminas Castle, named after the city’s founder. Visitors should take the time to see the cathedral, the castle and its fortifications, the university, the presidential palace, the Church of Saint Anne – built in the Gothic style – the Church of Saint Francis and Saint Bernard, the Aurora Gate and the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul – a baroque masterpiece. There are also some interesting museums in town, including the KGB museum and those dedicated to art and transport, among others.
The nightlife is very lively in Vilnius, with numerous bars, restaurants, cafes, night clubs and theatres for you to choose from and plenty of concerts and plays going on all year around.
Among the parks that you can visit in the city are the Europos and Vingio parks.
There is a good range of accommodation on offer and plenty of good restaurants to choose from. Make sure you sample the local beer and buy some handcrafts made with amber (a local specialty). Gedimino Prospectas is the best street for shopping, with shops selling everything from clothes to handmade chocolates.
