Venice is a city in the north of Italy.

It is sometimes known as the "City of Water", due to the many canals that make it up, which are due to the fact that the city is actually more than a hundred islands, connected by around four hundred bridges. These canals and bridges give the city its own unique charm. The city's many important churches include the Basilicas of St Mark, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Santa Maria della Salute, and many more. Venice is home to the famous St Mark's Square, which is a very interesting spot, and indeed Napoleon Bonaparte said that it was the most beautiful square in the whole of Europe. It is surrounded by important buildings, including the Ducal Palace, in the Gothic style.

The palace was the seat of government, as well the courts and prisons, of Venice. The city's most important festival is Carnival, which here has the curious feature of involving the wearing of masks by participants.
