Trieste is an Italian city on the Adriatic Sea, on the border with Slovenia. The old part of the city is the place to see the San Giusto Church, the Roman Theatre, the Temple of the Holy Trinity, the Orthodox church of San Spiridione and the Victoria Lighthouse; the Plaza Unitá d’Italia square is a meeting place for the people of Trieste, and its historical cafes are very popular.
The karst highlands near the city are excellent for excursions and caving, since there are many underground grottos and caves; the largest is the Grotta Gigante, which is 280 metres long and 107 metres high.
Trips to Val Rosanda are also interesting to see its gravel pits, rocks and varied vegetation.
The coast has an area called Barcola, and it is here that the famous sailing regatta, the Barcolana, is held. See Miramare Park, with its castle and museum. You can take an underwater excursion and visit the Butterfly Garden.
The range of hotels is very varied and comfortable, the cuisine is good, and the local wines -the terrano, refosco and malvasia- are excellent. You can have a fantastic time in Trieste.
