Montecatini is a city in the Italian region of Tuscany. It is famous for its thermal waters, which were first used for public baths in the 15th century, but which were famous for their curative powers long before that. It is close to the towns of Lucca, Florence and Pistoia and has wonderful spas that are close to parks, such as the pretty Park of the Spas. The accommodation is varied and generally very good, with some luxury resorts.
The restorative powers of the waters are not the only attraction of Montecatini, given that it also boasts historical monuments and some fine architecture. The old quarter is in the upper town, or Montecatini Alto, which has medieval alleys and is reached by a funicular, from which you get fantastic views of the Valdinievole.
The following are must-see places of interest: the Palazzo Comunale, the train station, Villa Forini Lippi, Padiglioncino Tamerici, Terma Tettuccio and the churches of Santa Maria Assunta, del Carmine, di San Pietro and Santa María a Ripa.
You will also be able to visit some excellent museums, play golf at Club Montecatini, go to Pistoia Zoo, go wine tasting in Lucca, visit the Pescia educational centre and go on a day trip to Florence.
