Florence is the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany. The Arno River runs through it. Florence is considered by many to be the cradle of the Renaissance and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city’s old quarter is home to the Cathedral of Santa María del Fiore, which has some wonderful frescos of the final judgement, as well as the Bell Tower, which was designed by Giotto, and the Baptistery, with its famous gold plated doors.
One of the city’s most iconic sights is that of the medieval Ponte Vecchio Bridge over the Arno. You should also go and see Vía Flaminia, which has some elegant jewellers. In the famous Piazza Della Signoria you can see the Neptune Fountain, the Palazzo that is home to the city council and some famous sculptures. You should make time to visit the world’s premier museum of Renaissance art, the Uffizi Gallery, which has works by Botticelli, Michael Angelo, Piero della Francesca, Raffael and others. The Bargello is the sculpture museum, which is housed in the old prison. Enjoy a Florentine steak with some good Chinati wine in a good trattoria, have a coffee in Piazza della Republica and try some famous “Rivoire” chocolate in Piazza Della Signoría.
Florence has a great nightlife, with pubs, nightclubs and all of the facilities that you need to have an unforgettable holiday.

Florence – part of the bigger Tuscan tour
by AlexTuscany as a destination is no great secret for British tourists. However, while visiting the area, it’s well worth taking a side-step to visit the region’s capital Florence. The city is only an hour and a half’s drive from favourite Tuscan towns such as Sienna, Lucca and Prato. And there is so much to see here including Michelangelo’s David statue, and other stunning sculptures. My favourite place and a great photo opportunity is to head down to the Ponte Vechhio bridge. The businesses here have been here for years and the views up the river are simply beautiful

Art Appreciation in Florence
by AlexIn my opinion, the finest art gallery and possibly the most famous to visit in Florence is the Uffizi Gallery. It is packed full of the some of the world’s most famous painting, including Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Primavera. However, for those without a great knowledge of the art, it’s worth booking a tour. I booked a tour at the hotel I was staying in. Not only did we jump the long queues to get in, but we were given fascinating insight into some of the most important paintings in the gallery, which no guidebook could ever give
