Alberobello is a town in the province of Bari, in the region of Apulia in Italy. It was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996 because of its traditional constructions, known as trulli.
These constructions, some of which date back to the 16th century, are stone buildings surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, with winding roads that make up a beautiful landscape that is much admired. Some of these trulli are used as restaurants, shops, sites for art shows and also as accommodation.
It is also possible to stay in comfortable 4 and 5-star hotels and there are many fine restaurants, serving excellent local dishes. You can come here by train, as the city of Bari is only 55 kilometres away.
From Alberobello you can walk to many other attractions, such as the interesting towns of Locorotondo, Cisternino and Ostuni and you can see the elegant Baroque architecture of Martina Franca. Together with the Castellana Grottos and the Itria Valley, these are the area's best excursions.
In Alberobello itself, don't miss the basilica, Trullo Sovrano, where you can see plays and concerts, the trullo church of San Antonio and the Trulli Museum.
