Abruzzo is a region in central Italy whose coastline is on the Adriatic Sea.

It is a mountainous region that is home to the highest peaks in the Apennine Mountains, Gran Sasso, as well as the Maiella range. It has a narrow coastal plain and several nature reserves and national parks.

Abruzzo is composed of four provinces: L’Aquila, (the capital), Chieti, Pescara, and Teramo.

In winter you can try your hand at skiing and snowboarding in the region’s excellent facilities. There are also lots of things to do in the summer, especially for nature lovers. Abruzzo has good national parks, lakes Penne and Scanno, which are wildlife havens sponsored by the WWF, the sulphur springs of Lavino, some lovely river valleys and, of course, the excellent beaches on the Adriatic. We recommend visiting the region’s churches, abbeys, medieval castles and archaeological sites that are testament to the pastoral background of Abruzzo. Visit the Sanctuary of Ercole Curino and the towns of Campovalano and Schiavi de Abruzzo. Discover the Roman legacy in Alba Fucens and the museums of Campli and Chieti. Don’t forget to go and see the antiques shops of Corfinio and Sulmona.
