Java is Indonesia's most populous island. Its capital is Jakarta, and here, in the main squares of Merdeka and Liberty, this bustling capital's main monuments are to be found.
One of the most important tourist cities is Yogyakarta, where you can see the Kraton, or Sultan's palace, with the garden where the Tamansari Water Castle is located. The north of the city is more modern, with Dutch architecture and the shopping areas. The Jalan Malioboro market is particularly popular with tourists.
Other interesting cities include: Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Cirebon, Pekalongan, Sukabumi, Malang and Surakarta.
40 kilometres to the northwest is the largest Buddhist monument in the world, Borobudur. It is situated on a 265-metre high hill between two volcanoes, and is considered to be one of wonders of the world. Another famous circuit in Central Java is Prambanan, a group of 240 temples dedicates to Shiva; these are UNESCO World Heritage. The beaches here are excellent, being very quiet, with white sand. The beaches at Pangandaran are some of the finest. There are safari, volcanoes and hot springs, all fascinating for the visitor. The cuisine and the hotels are excellent, so come and visit Java!
