'Ding' Darling National Wildlife Refuge provides an entry point into the habitats of the alligators, manatees, bald eagles, river otters, roseate spoonbills, and some 200 other bird species that pass through this area along a major flyway. Natural white-sand beaches stretch unbroken along the island's Gulf of Mexico shoreline. The island also acts as a catcher's mitt for shells washed up from the Caribbean and the Atlantic. For this reason, it is the best shelling destination in the US. Visitors come also for the wildlife attractions, a one-of-a-kind shell museum and year-round water and land sports. The centre of Periwinkle Place is around 20 minutes' walk, or a 3-minute drive, from the hotel and Sanibel Chamber is some 15 minutes' walk away. The nearest beach is 3 minutes away by car or 20 minutes on foot, while Fort Myers beach can be reached in around a 30-minute drive.
