Halkidiki is a Greek province, in the region of Central Macedonia. Its capital is the town of Polygyros.

The area has three long peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. The Holy Mount Athos is inhabited only by monks, who have managed to maintain their traditional way of life since the Byzantine period, which ended in 1453.
