Rothenburg is a city in the district of Ansbach, in the German federal state of Bavaria. It is a place with a charming medieval air to it, evocative of the many legends of that time and place. The most popular of these is the Meistertrunk, which took place during the Thirty Years War.
We recommend visiting the Spitalbastei fortress, which has an inscription from 1586, six gates and an amazing drawbridge. You should also take the time to go and see St. Jacob’s Church, built in the Gothic style, Plönlein Square, which is in the very centre of the city, and the Burggarten gardens, which are in the ruins of an old castle, of which the original gates and a huge tower remain intact. From the tower you get some excellent views of Rothenburg.
The city is also full of interesting museums, some of the best of which are the Criminal Museum of the Middle Ages, housed in a building erected in 1396, the Museum of Toys and Dolls, the German Christmas Museum and the Imperial City Museum (Reichsstadtmuseum). Come and discover the fascinating medieval city of Rothenburg!
