La Rochelle is the capital of the Département of Charente Maritime, in France.
This beautiful city is overflowing with monuments and buildings of high architectural and historical value. Notable among these is the Tower of St. Nicholas in the Old Port, a 40 metre high structure built on oak columns.
The old quarter of La Rochelle is a lovely place to take a stroll and soak up the architecture of the place. It is best reached through La Grosse Horloge gate, and some of the most remarkable buildings there are the Tower of Saint-Barthélemy (15thcentury), the Church of the St. Xavier (13thcentury), the Palace of Justice (1604), the Maison Henri II (16th century), the Hotel de la Bourse (18th century) – which is now home to the city’s Chamber of Commerce – and the Commercial Tribunal.
