Carcassone is the capital of the Departement of Aude, in southern France.
It is a walled medieval city located on top of a hill and next to the Aude River. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On Bastille Day, the 14th of July, the city puts on a fireworks display that is really worth a look.
You will be amazed by the number of vineyards in and around Carcassone.
Numerous towers, walls and drawbridges surround this medieval city, the biggest walled city in Europe. A good way to see the town is from the air, either on a hot air balloon or in a helicopter.
The citadel has 52 towers and two concentric walls. We recommend visiting the Castle of the Count, the inquisition palace, the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse, Place du Grand Puits and Place Marcou.
You will be able to stay in the old centre, or in the more affordable accommodation in the outskirts. Remember to take a boat trip along the Canal du Midi.
The modern city of Carcassone is across the river from the old quarter. You should go and see the Museum of Fine Arts, the Chapel of Notre Dame de la Santé and Place Carnot.

very friendly staff, room is clean and the beds are very comfortable. its not really luxurious but its total value for money.
The breakfast cost 8 EUR but was worth it. Would stay there again.
