Avignon is a French city on the left bank of the Rhone. It was the Papal residence in the 14th century.
The Papal Palace is an enormous Gothic fortress that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another landmark that shares this honour is Avignon Bridge, of which there are only four of the original twenty-two arches still standing. The palace is currently operating as a museum. Two other museums you should go and see are the Musee du Petit Palais and the Calvet Museum. Don’t forget to take a boat trip to Barthelasse Island, which has lots of parkland.
Avignon is only half an hour away from Marseille and just over two and a half hours from Paris by train.
Other highlights include lovely pedestrian shopping streets, good restaurants that are ideal places to savour the cuisine of Provence and the wines of Côte du Rhône, good cinemas and theatres – the city is host to a prestigious modern theatre festival – and other venues for music and dancing.
Among the different sports and games you can play in the Avignon area are golf, swimming, tennis and cycling. You can also go on an excursion to the local vineyards or take a boat trip down the Rhone and its tributaries, perfect ways to see the city from afar and marvel at the scenery.
