Kuusamo is a city located in the Finnish province of Oulu.
It is widely known for its natural beauty: lovely woods, a wilderness divided by lakes, rives and streams. It is also a major centre for winter sports as you are sure to find snow here, usually at least one metre thick. This is a true paradise for those who love snow sports since they can practice skiing, snowboarding and others.
The small market square is at the centre of Kuusamo. Nearby you will see the church with its two bells which have an interesting history behind them: in 1944, after having been removed from the church by the German troops, they were buried in the graveyard in order to protect them from the advance of the Soviets.
The bells were not seen again until 1959. The biggest of these had been a gift to the church by King Charles XI in 1698, while the smallest was a gift from Protestant ministers in 1721.
The city holds an important event: the Kuusamo Ruka Winter Games. Every year the city welcomes thousands of sportsmen and women, as well as amateurs and enthusiasts, who come to attend this competition.
Kuusamo is a pleasant, attractive destination. Come and see it for yourself!
