Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt; it extends along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

The city is divided into three regions: Brucheum, the most marvellous part of the city; the Jewish part towards the northeast and Rhakotis, occupied by the Egyptians. The ruins of the old city have been lost; the Pillar of Pompey is one the ancient monuments that still remain and is one of the most well known. It is an impressive granite column that is about 25 metres high and dates back to 297 A.C. Even so, Alexandria is filled with ancient mysteries. An important historical site is situated in the western area; it is the citadel of Qaitbay. It was built by a sultan in 1477 A.C to protect the city from raiders.
