Montañas/Llanuras del Norte/Arenal is an attractive area of Costa Rica, in the Guanacaste and Tilarán mountain ranges. This is also the location of the Guatuso, San Carlos, Sarapiquí and Chilamate plains, these last reaching as far as the border with Nicaragua. One of the zone's major attractions is the Arenal volcano, located in the province of Alajuela. It erupted last in 1968 but it still emits gasses and vapours, there are minor explosions and occasionally noises from within.
If you come here, then you can also enjoy the Tabacón thermal baths near the volcano. The landscape is stunning, and the baths are surrounded by tropical gardens. They are fed by the waters of the River Tabacón, which are naturally warm and contain many minerals, such as sulphur, which are considered to have curative powers.
