Veliko Tarnovo is a picturesque city in the north of Bulgaria, 250 kilometres from Sofia and 49 kilometres form the village of Bollentsi. It is considered to be one of the country's cultural centres, since it was the capital in the Middle Ages.
It is the ideal city to enjoy nature, and it is a very beautiful place thanks to its location on three hills, Tsarevets, Triaditsa and Sveta Gora; it is surrounded by the River Yantra, and of course it is full of history and culture, kept in its ancient buildings.
Walking along Gurko Street you can admire the Bulgarian Renaissance architecture, and if you want to see local crafts, go to Sava Ranovski Street. The Samovodene market square is the heart and business centre of Tarnovo.
On Tsarevets Hill there was once a Byzantine settlement and here you can visit the old Royal Palace. The highest point is where you can find the Church of the Ascension and other small church buildings. Not far from here is Arbanassi, which is a UNESCO recognised site with two monasteries and some of the oldest churches in Bulgaria. There are also facilities for horse riding and tennis.
