The Balkan Mountains stretch across southeastern Europe and run for about 560 kilometres, from Serbia through Bulgaria to the Black Sea.
The average height of this impressive mountain range is of 900 metres, with the Botev Peak, at 2,376 metres, being its highest point. The Balkans have an important pass called the Shipka Pass, which features a monument dedicated to the Russian and Bulgarian troops that fought in the Russo-Turkish War. The Iskar River forms a stunning natural landscape and passes through a rocky gorge in the mountains.
The Bulgarian part is home to the Central Balkan National Park, which protects the place's wildlife as well as some historical sites of global cultural and scientific significance. The park has large wooded areas of beech, firs and other species that are found nowhere else in the world.
