Mechelen is a city in the Belgian region of Flanders. Known as Malines in French, it is about 25 kilometres from Brussels and Antwerp.
The city’s official language is Dutch, but it also has its own dialect. It was the capital of the Low Countries in the era of the Dukes of Burgundy.
Mechelen is home to numerous churches and cathedrals. Perhaps the most remarkable of these is the Cathedral of Saint Roumbaut, which is graced by some incredible works by Rubens and has a 97 metre high tower with two bell sets that have 49 bells each. The city is also home to a bell tolling school that teaches the secrets of this difficult task. There are some wonderful historical buildings in the city’s Main Square, such as the Town Hall, which, appropriately for a city that made itself famous for its tapestries.
Don’t miss the Toy Museum and the Planckendael Zoological Gardens, which can be reached by boat, making for a perfect family outing. Make sure you get to taste the local bear, Carolus.
